Funding Databases

The following list of funding databases and descriptions was compiled and posted by Capella University in iGuide.

Community of Science (COS)
Community of Science database describes itself as “the most comprehensive source of funding information available on the Web, with more than 22,000 records, representing over 400,000 funding opportunities, worth over $33 billion.” Through COS, researchers can create a profile and then receive email alerts when a funding opportunity fits their proposed project. (This service is fee-based, however, and requires institutional subscriptions.)

Dissertation Grants Program (AERA)
The American Educational Research Association, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) of the Institute of Education Sciences, offers the Dissertation Grants Program. The program’s goals specifically relate to quantitative research using NCES and NSF data sets. AERA strongly encourages minority researchers to apply.

Foundation Directory
The Foundation Directory Online database offers its database services to subscribers. Unlike other databases, however, individuals (as well as institutions) may subscribe on either a monthly, annual, or biannual basis; and they may choose the number of records (the search plan) that best suits their budget and needs.

GrantsNet
The services of GrantsNet are provided free of charge. Most of the various granting programs focus primarily on research in the natural sciences, but the site also lists resources for behavioral or social science research. You may have to dig for them, however. (Grants for research in computer science are also heavily represented.)

Grants.Gov
According to its home page, “Grants.gov is THE single access point for over 1000 grant programs offered by all Federal grant-making agencies.” In addition to a complete listing of all available federal grants, it includes useful guidance on conducting a search for funding and applying for grants. Applicants can also receive email notification regarding changes in grant requirements and track the status of their submitted applications. Best of all—it’s free.
