Educational Tutorials Using Prezi

February 13, 2009 · Filed Under Commentary, Presentations, Software, Web Tools · 1 Comment

Several weeks back I came across Prezi beta that claims to allow,

…anyone who can sketch an idea on a napkin to create and perform stunning non-linear presentations with relations, zooming into details, and adjusting to the time left without the need to skip slides.

I was skeptical at first, but after seeing several sample presentations and receiving my beta invite, I had a chance to put together my first presentation using Prezi in about 30 minutes. I must admit that I am very impressed with this radically different approach to presentations. Prezi lives up to its claims and provides a simple and yet elegant workspace for creating as well as delivering presentations in real-time or sharing online for on-demand viewing.

I’d encourage anyone who gives presentations regularly to sign-up for a beta invite to Prezi and once you receive your invite, give Prezi a try.

While waiting for your beta invite, check-out the intro training video clips.

Mark my words…Prezi will completely transform the way presentations are given in the future. Prezi is that revolutionary!

Flickr photos backup utilities

December 10, 2007 · Filed Under Links, Software · Comment

I’ve recently been looking to organize and backup my photo libraries from Flickr. Unfortunately, Flickr has no built-in batch downloading of photos. But, I did come across several great free utilities that do allow for batch downloading of photos from your Flickr account.

Since FlickrDown was the first utility I came across, I gave it a try and it worked like a charm on my home PC. I haven’t yet tried the Mac utilities but the next time I backup from Flickr, I’ll definitely give them a try.

Anyone come across any other Flickr photo utilities worth sharing? I’d love to continue building my collection of Flickr utilities.

experimenting with Ustream

I’m continuing to experiment with Ustream.tv and I plan to attempt to stream my workshop entitled, Redesigning Course Materials for Online Delivery that I’ll be offering on Wednesday, 11/28 from 10:00am-11:30am CDT. For anyone who wants to take a peek, it’ll be streaming here: http://ustream.tv/channel/facdevprograms

I plan to attempt recording the session and will make the link to the archive available here once available. At this point, I still haven’t learned how to embed a Ustream video into a WordPress blog. I’m hoping there’s a plugin somewhere that I just haven’t stumbled across yet.

If anyone happens to know of a plugin for WordPress to embed Ustream videos, kindly send my way!

Miro - free, open source internet tv and video player

I just stumbled across a free, open source internet tv and video player called “Miro”. Details at http://www.getmiro.com

I’m really impressed with the list of features and head-to-head comparison of Miro to Joost. Miro boasts some great features…no DRM, access to any publisher with video RSS feeds, anyone can create a content guide, and that it uses open standards like RSS to facilitate syndication and aggregation.

All in all…I’d say, take Miro for a spin! I am.

ooVoo - FREE video chat tool

ooVoo - Free Video Conferencing and Video Messaging
Looks like there's another great video chat client available tha seems to be similar in many ways to Apple's iChat that boasts of up to 6-way video chatting all for FREE!  The service is called ooVoo and more info is at http://oovoo.com

When attempting to download, I noticed that they only had their Windows version available. However, by contacting their support center and requesting the Mac version, I was able to download it and install on my Mac.  Now, I'm ready to give ooVoo a try.  I'm curious to see how it compares to Skype and iChat.

So…anyone else with a computer that has a webcam and a high-speed Internet connection want to give ooVoo a try?  Get in touch and maybe we can arrange for a short video chat sometime.
